Buriram: The family of a Buriram ranger who was injured by a landmine while patrolling the Ta Muen Thom temple in Surin province has criticized Cambodia for violating the Ottawa Convention. They have urged Thai authorities to implement measures to prevent further incidents that could harm Thai soldiers.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred in the hometown of Sergeant Theeraphon Phiakhanthi, 47, a member of the 2610th Ranger Regiment. While on patrol at Prasat Ta Muen Thom, Sergeant Theeraphon stepped on a landmine, resulting in the loss of his left leg. He is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital. The local community has rallied around his family, offering support, especially to his mother, Mrs. Sakhon, 78. Despite her declining health, Mrs. Sakhon remains deeply concerned about her son's emotional well-being following the amputation. She is unable to visit him and relies on updates from her daughter and daughter-in-law. Her thoughts are with her son, and she hopes for his recovery.
The family feels a sense of pride in Sergeant Theerapol's service to his country but is distressed by the circumstances leading to his injury. They have called for action from the Thai government to safeguard soldiers from similar dangers. Moreover, they have condemned Cambodian authorities and military personnel for allegedly placing landmines that have caused numerous injuries to Thai soldiers patrolling the area.
