Experts Advise Caution on Antacid Use for Symptom Relief

Bangkok: Antacids should be taken only when symptoms of acid reflux occur and not as a preventative measure, experts advise. These medications, particularly those in the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) group, work by inhibiting the secretion of gastric acid, thus preventing acid from being released into the stomach.

According to Thai News Agency, taking antacids without experiencing symptoms can lead to several health issues. Long-term use is associated with increased gastric acid secretion when the medication is discontinued. Additionally, it can cause deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals such as B12, calcium, and magnesium. Chronic kidney disease, an increased risk of dementia in the elderly, and a heightened risk of osteoporosis, hip fractures, and spinal fractures are also potential consequences of prolonged use.

The advice is clear: antacids should be consumed solely for symptom relief and discontinued once symptoms subside to avoid these long-term health risks.
