Bangkok: An 80-year-old grandmother has become a topic of discussion after she was seen riding an electric bike at an extremely slow pace on a road in the Bang Khae area. Police have expressed their intentions to meet with her again after initial attempts to engage in a conversation were met with non-cooperation.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident came to light when a video of the woman riding her electric vehicle was circulated on the Facebook group "Bang Khae Economic Village News" and the page "Want to be Famous? We'll Make It Happen - Return Part 7." The footage has raised concerns among road users, who fear potential accidents on the narrow and busy roads in the area.
Our news team visited the location featured in the video and spoke with local residents. The elderly woman, affectionately known as "Auntie Sloth" by locals, is a familiar sight. However, her slow-moving vehicle is not appreciated as it causes significant traffic congestion, particularly in the evenings when schools in the area dismiss students. Despite being involved in an accident earlier this year, which left her with broken ribs, she has continued to drive her electric tricycle after recovery.
Yesterday, officers from Lak Song Police Station, along with community development officials from Bang Khae District Office, attempted to engage with the elderly woman. It was revealed that she lives alone and declined an offer to stay at a shelter. The authorities stressed that, while they respect her rights, they plan to issue a written warning to address the situation.
Pol. Col. Lertsak Khiamthasap, Superintendent of Lak Song Police Station, disclosed that the woman faces charges for using an unregistered vehicle, obstructing traffic, and driving without a license. However, due to her age and living conditions, the police are considering compassionate measures. A meeting is scheduled for next week to discuss appropriate legal actions under the Traffic Act.
The public is encouraged to monitor elderly family members' safety and educate them on road regulations regarding electric tricycles. While legal action will be taken if necessary, emphasis will be placed on warnings and raising public awareness. Repeated violations may result in stricter enforcement of the law.
