Bangkok: The Department of Mineral Resources has issued a warning for 18 provinces in Thailand, highlighting the dangers of landslides and flash floods due to heavy rainfall. Simultaneously, the National Water Resources Management Committee (NWRC) has confirmed that there are no plans to increase water release from the Chao Phraya Dam, stating that the current flooding situations in Nan province and the upstream areas of the Yom River in Phayao and Sukhothai are under control.
According to Thai News Agency, the Geohazard Operations Center of the Department of Mineral Resources has advised caution in landslide-prone regions. The warning follows continuous heavy rainfall forecasts impacting provinces including Nan, Phayao, Phrae, Uttaradit, Lamphun, and others. The Thai Meteorological Department has predicted very heavy rain in some parts of the North, Northeast, Central, and Eastern regions, with a monsoon trough and a strong low-pressure system contributing to the conditions.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant of the risks associated with heavy rainfall, such as flash floods and river overflows, particularly in areas near waterways and low-lying regions. Volunteer networks in high-risk areas are encouraged to monitor the situation closely and prepare for potential geological disasters.
Mr. Paitoon Kengkarnchang, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Water Resources Office, reported stable water levels in major rivers and dams, with current water volumes being managed effectively. The Chao Phraya Dam's current water release strategy remains unchanged, as floodwaters from upstream are being stored for future use. Although there is a possibility of increased water release if upstream flooding intensifies, current forecasts suggest no significant changes.
The NWRC has assured that there are no factors necessitating an increase in drainage levels that might impact low-lying areas in Ayutthaya province. The organization remains confident in the current management plans, ensuring that flooding in key areas is manageable and under control.
