Sa kaeo: Officials intercepted eight Thais who were believed to be working in Cambodia, hoping to become “gambling website administrators and language interpreters.” However, before they could cross the border, they were abandoned by a broker in a sugarcane field before reaching Cambodia.
According to Thai News Agency, Burapha Force, Aranyaprathet Task Force, conducted a border patrol operation and were able to intercept 8 Thais (6 men, 2 women) while they were walking in a natural channel heading towards the border canal (Nam Sai canal) to illegally cross into Cambodia at Ban Noen Sombun, Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province.
During a preliminary investigation, all Thais admitted to traveling to Cambodia to work. They were invited through a Facebook page to work as “online gambling website administrators” and “language interpreters.” They agreed to work without paying for their travel expenses, as they needed the money.
This group of workers arrived at Aranyaprathet Bus Terminal and were picked up by
Thai drivers to take them to the end of Ban Noen Somboon. Then, Cambodians took them on foot along a natural trail and allowed them to rest in a sugarcane field while awaiting the time to cross the border. The Cambodian guide then returned.
However, after waiting until morning, the Cambodian guide still hadn’t arrived. The eight Thais decided to walk back to a nearby village, but were discovered and apprehended by patrol officers. While the guide was not present, the officers detained the eight Thais, including both national ID cards and unregistered identity cards, and handed them over to investigators at the Khlong Nam Sai Police Station for legal proceedings on charges of illegally leaving the country.
