Education Ministry Expands AI Math Pilot to Full Academic Term

Bangkok:The Ministry of Education is planning to extend its AI-based mathematics learning pilot project, originally set for two months, to a full academic term across 100 schools. This initiative aims to gather comprehensive classroom data, as revealed by government officials on Wednesday.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Government Spokesperson Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn emphasized the government's efforts to incorporate artificial intelligence into classrooms. The focus is on enhancing learning analytics and personalizing education, particularly in mathematics.

The expansion follows consultations between Deputy Education Minister Akaranan Kankittinan, representatives from the Finnish edtech platform Eduten, and the Finnish Embassy in Thailand. The AI platform, developed by Finland's University of Turku, will be tested in schools under the Office of the Basic Education Commission at no cost. Eduten uses AI with gamified learning to evaluate student performance and assist teachers in identifying areas for improvement.

To assess the program's effectiveness, the ministry proposed extending the trial period to approximately four months. This extension will help track student achievement, teacher usage, and overall classroom impact before deciding on a wider implementation. Patdarasm highlighted that the objective is to determine whether AI can enhance student learning and support teachers, with Eduten collaborating with OBEC to align the platform's content with the Thai national curriculum and provide teacher training.
