Bangkok: The Director-General of the Rice Department has clarified that "Siam Hom Mali" rice is not the same as "Jasmine rice," aiming to alleviate confusion among farmers and prevent potential impacts on their incomes. He emphasized that only two varieties are classified as Thai Hom Mali rice, each with its distinct purchase price. The department is also committed to ongoing research for new rice varieties.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anon Nonsee, Director-General of the Rice Department, addressed misunderstandings among farmers concerning "Hom Mali" and "Hom Siam" rice. He stressed that confusion over purchasing prices could adversely affect farmers' incomes. The Rice Department clarified that the only two varieties of Thai Hom Mali rice are Khao Dok Mali 105 and RD15.
"Siam Hom Mali" rice is not included in the Thai Hom Mali rice group. It is a variety developed by the private sector and registered with the Department of Agriculture for commercial purposes. Currently, it is undergoing certification from the Rice Department. The department is in close consultation with rice buyers to clearly differentiate purchase prices and variety types. Farmers are urged not to confuse "Siam Hom Mali" with "Jasmine" rice due to their significantly different purchase prices.
The Director-General further stated that the department continues its efforts in researching and developing new rice varieties. These efforts focus on meeting market demand with high-quality, disease- and insect-resistant varieties that yield high productivity per rai. Importantly, the goal is to help reduce costs and increase farmers' incomes.
