Department of Rural Roads Mobilizes Response to Tropical Storm Matmo

Bangkok: The Department of Rural Roads is deploying personnel and resources to address the challenges posed by Tropical Storm Matmo, which has intensified into a typhoon in the upper South China Sea. Efforts are focused on ensuring the safety and accessibility of roads, as 15 routes have been rendered impassable by flooding.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pichit Hunsiri, Acting Director-General of the Department of Rural Roads, stated that the department is actively managing routes and facilitating public access in flood-affected areas. Regional agencies have been instructed to provide alternative routes where necessary and coordinate with provincial bodies for immediate assistance to residents. In cases of road or bridge damage, such as fallen trees or broken infrastructure, swift repairs and deployment of machinery are prioritized to restore access.

Currently, the Department of Rural Roads reports that 58 routes in 23 provinces have been affected by floods. While 43 routes remain passable, 15 are not, with significant water levels and damage reported in areas like Uttaradit, Phrae, and Mae Hong Son. Specific issues include eroded roads and bridges, with water levels reaching up to 150 centimeters in certain locations. Emergency measures, such as the installation of Bailey bridges, are being expedited to address these challenges.

The department has implemented warning signs and water level indicators to ensure public safety on affected roads. An immediate assessment and repair process will be initiated as soon as water levels recede. The Department of Rural Roads urges the public to report any flooding incidents via their hotline to facilitate prompt response and assistance.
