Bangkok: The Minister of Culture is preparing to visit the area to promote tourist attractions in the country.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, who recently assumed her role as Prime Minister and Minister of Culture, shared her plans following a visit to Ubon Ratchathani Province. During her visit, she explored Wat Mahawanaram, also known as Wat Pa Yai, where a notable candle tree had secured the 1st runner-up prize in a prestigious large-sized printing category for 2025. This visit marks just over two weeks since her appointment as Minister of Culture.
Ms. Paethongtarn revealed her intentions to visit the Ministry of Tourism and Sports next week. The objective of the visit is to assess Thailand's tourist attractions and determine which sites require preservation or improvement. The government aims to enhance the appeal and condition of these sites to bolster tourism.
Regarding the burgeoning interest among Thai entrepreneurs in co-producing films, Ms. Paethongtarn acknowledged the impact of the government's cash rebate policy. This policy offers financial incentives to foreign filmmakers shooting in Thailand, and it has sparked increased interest among local entrepreneurs. Ms. Paethongtarn expressed her agreement with this policy and is currently examining the specific requirements and elements necessary to maximize its effectiveness.
Before addressing the media, Ms. Paethongtarn lightheartedly remarked on her absence from interviews, stating, "I haven't given an interview in a long time. I miss you." She remained focused on cultural and tourism matters, avoiding political discussions during the interview.
Ms. Paethongtarn later shared a message on social media about her visit to Ubon Ratchathani. She emphasized the cultural significance of the candle-making community, which contributes to the grand candle procession in the province. The candle tree from Wat Mahawanaram earned a 2nd place in the 2025 contest, showcasing the region's rich cultural heritage.
Looking ahead, Ms. Paethongtarn plans another visit to expedite Buddhist tourism initiatives, as well as the repair and maintenance of ancient sites. This collaborative effort with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports aims to preserve national treasures and elevate cultural tourist attractions, particularly those under UNESCO's consideration.
