New york: Coco Gauff delivered a superb performance, defeating Sonmez 2-0 sets to secure her first victory at the US Open. Coco Gauff, a fan favorite from the local tennis club, started her quest for a second US Open title in spectacular fashion, defeating Zenep Sonmez of Turkey 2-0 (6-3 and 6-4). According to Thai News Agency, the 22-year-old American tennis player took to the court with confidence after recently winning the Cincinnati Open. She is currently vying for her third Grand Slam title, following her major success in New York in 2023. Gauff dominated the game under the dimly lit, covered Arthur Ashe Stadium, breaking serve only once in the first set and closing it out in just over half an hour. Meanwhile, Sonmez, the 24-year-old ranked 53rd in the world, also had moments of excellent form and landed several beautiful winners, including a powerful backhand that drew applause from tennis fans throughout the stadium. Sonmez started to find her footing better in the second set, immediately breaking G auff's serve after Gauff had broken her first, and began to put pressure on the fourth seed with deep strokes and close-to-the-net attacks. Gauff found herself in a difficult situation while trailing 2-3 but saved three break points to hold her serve and level the score before breaking Sonmez's serve back to make it 4-3 and then taking full control of the match. For Gauff, who has reached at least the fourth round of the US Open in the last four years, she will await the winner between Daria Kasatkina or Paula Badosa in the second round.
