Chiang Mai Holds Ceremony to Honor Ping River Ahead of Yi Peng Festival 2024.

Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai held a significant ceremony to worship the White Chedi Shrine and sought forgiveness from the Ping River in preparation for the annual Yi Peng or Loi Krathong Festival 2024. The event was led by the Mayor of Chiang Mai, who, along with the municipality staff, paid homage to the spirit house of Princess Dara Rasami to seek blessings for the success of the upcoming festival. According to Thai News Agency, the ceremony included a tribute to the sacred White Pagoda, built in memory of Pu Piang, a historical figure who sacrificed his life defending Chiang Mai against the Burmese army. The ritual was performed to honor his spirit and his undying love for the country. The ceremony also involved asking for forgiveness from the Ping River, which has been a lifeline for the residents of Chiang Mai for over seven centuries. The Yi Peng Festival, scheduled from November 14-17, will be celebrated under the theme "The Charm of Mae Raming, the Light of Art and Culture." The city was illuminated with candlelight at its four corners and five city gates, symbolizing respect and offerings in Buddhist tradition. Residents participated in lighting candles at the Three Kings Monument, with hundreds of dancers performing the traditional Lanna candle dance, captivating both locals and tourists alike. Tourists, both Thai and foreign, are invited to partake in activities showcasing the charm of Lanna culture. These activities include creating miniature Lanna lanterns, styling hair with flowers in the Lanna tradition, and lighting candles to symbolize hope for a bright future during the Yi Peng festival.
