Nakhon ratchasima: The Cabinet is moving forward with the Korat Horticultural Expo 2029, along with a Legacy Plan to create long-term benefits for the community. The Cabinet has endorsed the relocation of the Korat World Horticultural Expo from Khong District to Pak Chong District, following a cost-effectiveness study by the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC).
According to Thai News Agency, Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the Cabinet reviewed its resolutions from November 16, 2021, and January 4, 2022. The decision was influenced by the NESDC's analysis, which recommended moving the venue to the Dairy Research and Development Center in Pak Chong District. This location, which belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, eliminates the need for additional land purchases, thus reducing the government's long-term budgetary commitments.
The NESDC's assessment highlighted the Pak Chong area's advantages, including better transportation, infrastructure, and visitor accommodation facilities. The Cabinet has also approved the rapid development of a Master Plan and a Legacy Plan to ensure efficient and sustainable use of the site post-event.
The financial framework for the event remains set at 4,281 million baht, consistent with the January 4, 2022, Cabinet resolution. An additional central budget of 88.33 million baht is allocated for hiring a master plan and detailed design for the venue, alongside 6 million baht for reviewing readiness and preparing the necessary documentation for the site change.
Captain Patradarasmie emphasized the urgency of venue preparation to comply with the event certification timeline. Thailand is required to coordinate with agencies to exhibit the new venue's readiness to the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) by September 4, 2026, and secure approval from the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) by October 6, 2026. The event is scheduled to open on November 10, 2029, necessitating swift action to meet international standards.
The Cabinet also sanctioned the event's official name change, as per BIE guidelines, to 'International Horticultural Expo 2029 Korat Thailand' or 'Expo 2029 Korat Thailand'. This adjustment aligns with international event certification processes.
For the original Khong District site, the NESDC recommends that Nakhon Ratchasima Province and related agencies fast-track the development of land use plans. This approach intends to involve local communities, farmers, and stakeholders in determining the land's future use, aiming to foster sustainable development, generate income, and enhance the quality of life for residents.
