Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, acting as Prime Minister, addressed the ongoing public debate over the Thai-Cambodian border, emphasizing that the opening and closing of border checkpoints were authorized by the previous government through the National Security Council (NSC). He stated that such decisions should not be passed around indiscriminately, indicating that the military retains the authority to make final decisions.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham noted that the previous government delegated authority to the NSC concerning border checkpoint operations, which consequently assigned the decision-making responsibility to the military. He emphasized that "Big Lek" is competent in resolving border problems. Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, Deputy Leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, also mentioned that discussions with the General Border Committee (GBC) were consistent with the policy framework set by the previous government. He stressed that no one should be pushed back and forth on this matter, as it has long been within the established frameworks of the government and military.
The closure of border checkpoints is a significant issue impacting trade, and the NSC has tasked the military and the Ministry of Defense with taking actions to restore normalcy. Decisions after the delegation of authority have rested with the military, with specific responsibilities designated to various military regions, including the 2nd Army Region, the 1st Army Region, and the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defense Forces. The military is considered knowledgeable in addressing the issues and their impacts, particularly on Thai business operators.
Mr. Phumtham also remarked on the role of Deputy Defense Minister General Natthapol Nakphanit, who has been working with both the previous and the new government. He is expected to report back to the Special GBC Meeting No. 1/2025. Despite General Natthapol's ongoing work, the cabinet has not yet been formed under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
Regarding General Natthapol's suitability as Defense Minister in the new government, Mr. Phumtham expressed confidence in his abilities, noting his experience as a former Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army and Secretary-General of the NSC. However, he highlighted that the new government's policy will be crucial in determining the course of action.
