Bangkok: "Benz Racing" has joined the Senate's Subcommittee on Human Rights to advocate for enhancing the quality of life for prisoners, emphasizing the need to separate prisoners awaiting trial from those already convicted.
According to Thai News Agency, the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Rights, and Liberties of the Senate, operating under the Committee on Political Development, Public Participation, Human Rights, Rights, Liberties, and Consumer Protection, is addressing issues within prisons by consulting former inmates and civil society organizations. These stakeholders have been invited to share their insights and experiences, aiming to refine the standards for managing the quality of life in Thai prisons.
The meeting concentrated on developing standards concerning the living conditions within prisons, assessing human rights issues under the Department of Corrections, and proposing improvements from a civil society viewpoint. Participants included Senators Sunthorn Phruksapipat, Tewarit Maneechai, Pornchai Wityalertphan, race car driver Benz Racing (Akkarakit Worarojcharoendej), and various human rights organizations such as the Lawyers Center for Human Rights and Amnesty International Thailand.
Benz Racing expressed his support for a Department of Corrections pilot policy at Bangkok Special Prison, which aims to separate inmates awaiting trial from convicted prisoners. He urged correctional facilities nationwide to assist these inmates by providing necessary documentation for court proceedings.
This meeting marks a pivotal step for the Senate in fostering public engagement and leveraging firsthand political experiences to bolster human rights protection and enhance the justice system's efficacy.
