Bangkok Competes to Host 2030 Youth Olympic Games

Bangkok: Thailand is making a concerted effort to host the 2030 Youth Summer Olympic Games.

According to Thai News Agency, the Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has announced that Bangkok is competing against Asunci³n, Paraguay, and Santiago, Chile, to secure the prestigious event. The Governor expressed confidence in Thailand's readiness, noting the country's strengths in promoting youth activities, education, and the broader economic and social benefits the event could bring to communities. This comprehensive approach is seen as a strong point in Thailand's bid.

Dr. Kongsak Yodmani, the SAT Governor, stated that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is currently in the process of selecting the host city for the 5th Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2030. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has received cabinet approval to proceed with the bid. Bangkok is among the three finalist cities, and the official announcement of the host city is expected mid-year.

Dr. Kongsak emphasized that Bangkok, in collaboration with the SAT, will present a detailed proposal to the IOC highlighting Thailand's readiness. He noted that Thailand's potential extends beyond just sports development, with a focus on youth activities, education, and community benefits, which position the country as a strong contender alongside Paraguay and Chile.

The Summer Youth Olympic Games, targeting youth aged 15-18, feature the same sports as the traditional Olympic Games and occur every four years. The inaugural Games were held in Singapore in 2010, followed by Nanjing, China in 2014, and Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2018. The fourth edition, initially scheduled for 2022 in Dakar, Senegal, was postponed to 2026, running from October 31st to November 13th.
