Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister of Thailand, inaugurated the Gastech 2026 forum, emphasizing the country's strategic positioning as a hub for regional energy cooperation. According to Thai News Agency, the event highlighted three approaches to navigating a sustainable energy transition: ensuring energy security, facilitating a realistic transition, and promoting enhanced investment.
Mr. Anutin addressed the pressing challenge of balancing energy supply with sustainable practices. He noted that energy dynamics significantly influence the cost of living and business operations in Thailand. With rising electricity demands driven by industrial expansion, the government is tasked with maintaining energy security while nurturing sustainable practices.
The first approach outlined by Mr. Anutin is to secure energy at affordable prices, with natural gas and LNG playing pivotal roles in stabilizing the power system. Thailand plans to boost renewable energy sources and diversify its energy portfolio, aiming to protect consumers and businesses from global market fluctuations.
The second approach focuses on actualizing the energy transition by expanding renewable energy sources and enhancing the power grid and storage systems. The government is set to launch a 50 billion baht initiative in mid-October to encourage solar panel installations in households, alongside import tax exemptions on select components. This move aims to reduce electricity costs and enhance public access to clean energy, with bioenergy development from agriculture adding value and income for farmers.
The third approach emphasizes aligning energy policy with economic and investment opportunities. The government seeks to foster long-term investment by refining regulations, infrastructure, and human resources. The first half of the year saw a 37% increase in investment promotion applications, leading to potential job creation. The government aims to enhance Thai workforce skills and build robust supply chains, ultimately improving job quality and income.
Mr. Anutin highlighted the importance of international cooperation in shaping the energy landscape. Thailand is prepared to collaborate in areas like natural gas, LNG, renewable energy, and clean technologies. With its strategic ASEAN location, Thailand aspires to be a central hub for investment, innovation, and energy collaboration.
He also acknowledged Gastech's role over the past five decades in connecting the global energy community and expressed hopes for fruitful investments and technological advancements from this conference. Mr. Anutin reiterated Thailand's readiness to partner in creating a secure, accessible, and clean energy future that fosters sustainable growth.
