Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has refuted claims of criticizing Minister of Industry Ekanat Promphan during a recent cabinet meeting. Anutin clarified that his remarks were solely aimed at urging an investigation into allegations concerning the TIS mark compliance of a company prior to Ekanat’s appointment as Minister.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin addressed reports on the ongoing efforts to locate survivors at the collapsed Office of the Auditor General building. Anutin emphasized that continuous updates are being received, and directives have been given for representatives from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and the Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning to attend the events. This move ensures their presence during the earthquake scenario unfolding in Bangkok, with the Governor of Bangkok spearheading relief efforts and decision-making.
In response to queries about China Railway No. 10, a Chinese joint venture collaborating with various government ministries, Anutin confirmed that its activities with the Provincial Electricity Authority are under investigation. He stated that immediate action would be taken if any potential risks are identified.
On the subject of the Ministry of Interior’s investigation committee, Anutin revealed that the focus is on scrutinizing construction, design, and materials. While urgent inspections are underway, priority is given to locating survivors at the disaster site. Despite the passage of over 100 hours, hope remains for successful rescue efforts.
Discussing relief measures, Anutin assured that the government has established rules to expedite assistance. The majority of losses stem from construction sites, affecting workers and employees. Social security, compensation, and insurance processes are being fast-tracked to ensure timely support for victims.
Regarding the inspection by the Department of Public Works, which identified certain buildings as being in the red zone, Anutin disclosed that while a report exists, specific names were not immediately recalled. He highlighted the urgency of reinforcing these structures and noted that buildings deemed beyond repair must be demolished for safety reasons. Entry into red-zone buildings is strictly prohibited to prevent accidents.
Anutin concluded by addressing allegations presented by a reporter, who suggested that he criticized Ekanat over substandard steel bearing the TIS mark. Anutin firmly denied the accusation, explaining that he merely requested an investigation. He emphasized that TIS standards were likely issued before Ekanat’s tenure, making criticism unwarranted. Anutin dismissed the report and exited the interview promptly.
