Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has announced plans to overhaul the Social Security system, aiming to shed its bureaucratic image and adopt a more professional management style similar to the Government Pension Fund (GPF). This announcement comes amid a period of caretaker governance and coincides with his defense of Labour Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn against accusations regarding the use of luxury aircraft.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin addressed the media regarding his conversation with Labour Minister Trinuch Thianthong about the ongoing issues in the social security sector. He mentioned meeting with Thianthong, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, and the Secretary-General of the Social Security Office to gain insight into the situation. Anutin emphasized that no serious problems had been reported to him and that the information circulating in the media was inaccurate. He instructed the relevant authorities to hold a press conference to clarify the situation publicly, highlighting the importance of transparency during the caretaker period following the dissolution of parliament.
Anutin outlined his vision for reform, expressing concern over the perception that the Social Security Office is overly controlled by government agencies due to its bureaucratic structure. He suggested a model akin to the GPF, where a selection process would replace the current practice of appointing civil servants as the Secretary-General. This would ensure increased transparency and independence in the agency's operations.
When questioned about the potential privatization of the system, Anutin clarified that while he is considering such a move, no immediate actions would be taken due to the current political context. He also refrained from commenting on the controversy regarding changes in the Social Security Board's structure, suggesting that this matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Labour Minister.
The Prime Minister also addressed allegations against the Social Security Office, such as misuse of funds for luxury travel and tailored suits. He defended the former Labour Minister, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, stating that accusations of first-class travel were unfounded. Anutin urged those with evidence of irregularities to file formal complaints with the National Anti-Corruption Commission, underscoring the importance of legal processes over online accusations.
In response to questions about the political climate, Anutin assured that the Bhumjaithai Party aims to avoid conflict and focus on policy-driven campaigns. He criticized other parties for engaging in negative campaigning and emphasized the importance of presenting constructive policies to the public.
Anutin concluded by discussing the Bhumjaithai Party's focus on national security and administration, dismissing speculation about future ministerial roles until the upcoming elections are concluded. He stressed the need to approach political challenges step by step, maintaining a pragmatic outlook on the evolving political landscape.
