Anutin Charnvirakul Advocates for Economic Advancement at Thailand-Myanmar Business Forum 2026

Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul highlighted his vision of "the economy must move forward" during the opening of the Thailand-Myanmar Business Forum 2026, emphasizing the need to enhance trade and investment cooperation between the two nations. The forum aims to achieve a bilateral trade target of US$12 billion.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and President Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar jointly inaugurated the forum themed "New Chapter and Future of Enhancing the Thailand-Myanmar Business Partnership." The event, organized by the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Association and the Federation of Myanmar Chambers of Commerce and Industry, saw participation from over 700 representatives from both countries' government and business sectors. During the forum, Prime Minister Anutin expressed his honor and commitment to advancing economic cooperation founded on trust and mutual benefit. He underscored the government's responsibility to ensure citizens' well-being, emphasizing the importance of a resilient economy and thriving businesses.

Mr. Anutin acknowledged the pivotal role of the private sectors of Thailand and Myanmar in connecting both economies over the years. With Myanmar being one of Thailand's key economic partners, bilateral trade currently stands at over US$7.4 billion, showcasing considerable growth potential. Thai investments in Myanmar span several sectors, including energy, industry, manufacturing, and tourism, all critical for long-term economic development.

Mr. Anutin revealed that discussions with Myanmar's President resulted in agreements to enhance cooperation in various areas. They expressed satisfaction over the reopening of the First Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge and committed to addressing regulatory challenges to maximize trade along this route. Plans to open additional border crossings to facilitate cross-border trade were also discussed. To revitalize trade relations, Thailand will host a Joint Trade Commission meeting aiming for a US$12 billion bilateral trade target.

Regarding investment, Mr. Anutin assured Myanmar's President of the Thai private sector's confidence in Myanmar's potential. He emphasized expanding investments in energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and future industries. The Thai government pledged support by reducing obstacles and improving regulations to facilitate business expansion and job creation.

In the energy sector, Mr. Anutin committed to continuing existing projects and expediting processes to ensure energy security. A joint working group will be established to enhance connectivity through transportation and logistics infrastructure development.

Mr. Anutin noted the global restructuring of supply chains and highlighted the importance of effective connectivity for seizing opportunities. He emphasized that Thailand and Myanmar have significant potential in the region, and cooperation between the two countries' transportation systems is crucial. The private sector is expected to drive these opportunities, with both governments supporting businesses and entrepreneurs in transforming opportunities into tangible outcomes. The Thailand-Myanmar Business Forum 2026 is seen as a starting point for cooperation and change, aiming to create a stable and sustainable economic future for both nations. Mr. Anutin expressed gratitude to the organizers and wished for the event's success.
