Anutin Charnvirakul Addresses Leaked Photo Controversy Involving Ben Smith

Bangkok: Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Anutin Charnvirakul, responded to the emergence of a leaked photograph featuring him alongside Ben Smith, stating that the date of the photo was already known to the public. He clarified that while they were acquainted, they were not close. He further questioned the journalists about the timeline, emphasizing it was their first encounter.

According to Thai News Agency, when questioned about the political implications of the photograph, Anutin expressed that the situation was under his discretion. He asserted that he typically had no business interactions with the individual and queried the media about Smith's citizenship status.

When reporters inquired if the photograph contributed to Anutin's removal from the Interior Minister position, he affirmed it was among the allegations. However, he clarified that his removal was not from the government but rather a transition to the role of Minister of Public Health, a position he did not desire, leading to his withdrawal from the government. Anutin called for a fair discussion on the matter.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the Bhumjaithai Party was not expelled from the previous administration. He urged the media to accurately present the situation, indicating that he was only asked to resign as Minister of Interior to assume the role of Minister of Public Health, which the Bhumjaithai Party declined.

Addressing the notion of a political ploy, Anutin advised that the issues should be thoroughly thought through, analyzed, and separated correctly.

When queried about the origins of the photo leak, Anutin suggested that the knowledge was widespread among reporters and the public. Regarding Ben Smith's visit, he described their interaction as a casual acquaintance through mutual friends, noting that they met at an event and exchanged greetings.

When asked about the frequency of his meetings with Ben Smith, Anutin questioned the reporter's intent, stating he encountered Smith about five or six times at various events.

In response to whether Ben Smith had significant connections with the country's elders, Anutin laughed, indicating that the photo, taken seven years ago, spoke for itself. When confronted with the suggestion that the government's hesitance to act against Ben Smith's associates might stem from this connection, Anutin retorted with a cryptic remark, asserting his resolve and challenging the reporter's understanding of his stance.
