Bangkok: Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Anutin Charnvirakul, has clarified his connection to Ben Smith, following the release of a decade-old photo with the businessman. Anutin admitted to knowing Smith but insisted they were not close and had no business transactions together. He emphasized that the photo, which recently surfaced, was taken ten years ago, and questioned the significance of its release now.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin addressed the issue at a press conference, responding to the media's inquiries regarding Smith, who has been identified by the United States as a high-risk individual linked to a transnational scam. The Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) recently seized Smith's assets. Anutin stated that if anyone was involved with Smith, they would face legal action. Additionally, he mentioned that the media was already aware of the photo's existence and questioned the motives behind its release.
When probed about the possibility of an arrest warrant for Smith, Anutin stated that legal procedures would follow if necessary. He reiterated his limited acquaintance with Smith, describing their interactions as minimal and primarily through mutual friends. Anutin also expressed surprise at the focus on a decade-old photo, suggesting that it was not indicative of any significant relationship.
Anutin addressed speculation about political motives behind the photo's release and its potential connection to his previous resignation from the Ministry of Interior. He acknowledged that his association with Smith was one of the reasons cited for his departure but insisted it was not a removal from government service. Instead, he stated that he transitioned to the role of Minister of Public Health by choice.
In response to questions about the government's image management amid a flooding crisis and scam allegations, Anutin emphasized the need to separate these issues. He suggested that the photo's release might be linked to political maneuvering. Anutin also dismissed claims from Rangsiman Rome, deputy leader of the Prachachon Party, that his connection to Smith affected his handling of scam-related matters, stating that such accusations underestimated his efforts.
