Police have sought a warrant from Phang-nga provincial court for the arrest of former abbot of Wat Dhammakaya, Phra Thepyarnmahamunee or Phra Dhammachayo, and another accomplice for alleged forest and public land encroachment to build a monastery.
Pol Gen Srivara Rangseepromnakul, the deputy national chief, said on Wednesday that the request for arrest warrant against the embattled former abbot of Wat Dhammakaya and Mr Petch Kamsap followed investigation by police and forest officials into alleged forest encroachment on Yao island off Phang-nga for the construction of a monastery under the Muk Tawan project of Wat Dhammakaya.
Armed with a search warrant issued by the Phang-nga provincial court, a combined force of police, military personnel, local and forest officials searched the venue on December 21.
The officials found out that a swathe of Kuan Jook forest in Tambon Koy Yao Noi had been cleared and construction of the monastery was under way.
