According to Thai News Agency, the Ubon Ratchathani Wildlife and Nature Study Center is preparing to host the "Shrimp Migration Festival," a unique event in Thailand, with an official opening ceremony scheduled for September 5th. This annual event was closed last year due to border unrest but has now returned, allowing visitors the chance to witness the shrimp migration firsthand.
The phenomenon, discovered about 20 years ago, involves millions of small freshwater shrimp, including hairy-clawed shrimp and giant freshwater shrimp, migrating along the rocky rapids of Kaeng Lam Duan during the flood season in August and September. The shrimp move upstream to the Dom Yai River to breed and lay eggs, avoiding the strong current that could sweep them downstream. The migration's scale is influenced by natural factors such as rainfall.
