71-Year-Old Buriram Woman Survives 8-Meter Fall Into Hidden Hole

Buriram:A 71-year-old grandmother from Ban Kruat District, Buriram Province, narrowly escaped death after falling into an 8-meter-deep hole in a cassava field. The woman, identified as Mrs. Thongkhun Tongtiram, also known as Grandma Koon, was buried under rocks, sand, and soil with only her head remaining above ground.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred when Thongkhun stepped on grass and branches that concealed the hole's opening. She was working in the field as a helper for her younger brother, earning 300 baht a day. After falling, she screamed for help, hoping nearby relatives and villagers would hear her cries. Rescuers, including officials and villagers, worked for over an hour to pull her out safely.

Following the rescue, Thongkhun was taken to Ban Kruat Hospital, where she stayed overnight for treatment. She sustained abrasions on her arms, legs, and back and was described as weak and frightened. Despite her stable condition, she remains traumatized by the experience and has vowed not to return to the field.

The scene of the incident was visited by reporters, who noted the presence of trenches and crevices eroded into the sandstone rocks, creating dangerous, concealed holes. Officials have since marked the area with warning signs to prevent further accidents.

Thongkhun expressed her deep gratitude to those who assisted in her rescue, particularly her relatives and grandchildren. She described the ordeal as feeling like a near-death experience and pledged offerings to sacred spirits in gratitude for her survival. The incident highlights the dangers of working in remote fields, where hidden hazards can pose significant risks, and underscores the importance of taking safety precautions.
