A ferry travelling from Kali Adem to Tidung island in North Jakarta burst into flames on the morning of New Year's Day, killing 23 people on board, The Jakarta Post Online reported on Sunday.
There were about 100 passengers on board the ferry when the fire from the engine room reached the fuel container and exploded into flames, said Thousand Islands Regency fire fighter and safety chief Eko Mahendro.
A fire boat unit and two water pumps were sent to help fire fighters to put out the fire.
